Out there on the skeletal plains
A lone horse proudly takes no reins
The sky awash in red and brown
She tracks the sun as it touches down

Thinking slow but traveling fast
Through the empty reaches of the past
Studying the hand she’s drawn
Crossed the line and well beyond

The steady roar
The slowing breath
Looking for the life so long submerged
In the undiscovered depths

Past the stubbled fields her family sowed
For a century in New Mexico
Holds her breath as she catches sight
In the rearview mirror: one black eye

So few choices prospects dim
To go and settle for the likes of him
She told that bounder “not once more,”
"Or I’ll drag you feet first out that door”

Out in the cold
A shovel’s heft
Hoping for a new life in the wake
of an undiscovered death

Call it mercy, call it sin
But the lawman said “She’s coming in”
Hasty exit no goodbyes

Told herself “I’m free at last”
Slipped the dead hands of the past
